June Chebet, the daughter of former President Daniel Arap Moi has died.  The family, however, has not disclosed further details regarding her passing, and has requested privacy during this period of mourning.

"We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved, June Chebet Moi, this morning," the statement said.

"At this time of grief, we request your prayers and privacy as we, the family, come to terms with the tragic loss of our sister. May her soul rest in eternal peace," it added.

But who was June Chebet?

Chebet was the youngest daughter among the former President's eight children.

Moi had five sons and three daughters, including a set of twins, among his children.

June Chebet was adopted by the former president and nurtured to become a part of the family.

She attended Nairobi Primary School, Kenya High School, and later pursued university studies in Canada. She found success as a businesswoman.

Among the former President's other children are Gideon Moi, who carved out a political career for himself in Kenya, Jonathan Toroitich (a former rally driver who passed away in 2019), and Philip Moi (a retired army officer), among others.

Moi married Lena Moi, the daughter of prominent Eldama Ravine farmer and pioneer Christian Paul Bomet, in 1950.

Lena, a trained teacher, later became a full-time housewife to raise the children as Moi's political career flourished.

The couple separated in 1974, and quietly divorced in 1979. The former president never remarried.

Lena retreated to a quiet life at her Rongai farm, where she passed away in July 2004.

Like many parents, Moi had his favorites, and Chebet was especially close to his heart.

Chebet and Gideon were Moi's favored children.

Gideon followed in his father's footsteps as a politician and assumed the role of the family spokesperson.

Chebet led a quiet life, and further details about her are scarce.
