Following heavy rains, at least 20 fatalities have been reported in Mai Mahiu due to flash floods. The Kenya Red Cross stated that the floods, originating from an overflowing river, caused havoc in Kamuchiri Village.
Naivasha police commander Stephen Kirui confirmed ongoing rescue efforts and noted that several individuals had been hospitalized.
He warned that the death toll could rise as search and rescue operations continue. The incident also led to the closure of the Nairobi-Mai Mahiu road, stranding many travelers.
The government postponed the reopening of schools to May 6, 2024, citing safety concerns. Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu emphasized the need to prioritize student and staff safety in flood-affected areas. He announced the postponement, stating,
"The devastating effects of the rains in some of the schools are so severe that it will be imprudent to risk the lives of learners and staff before water-tight measures are put in place."
Schools were initially set to reopen on April 29. Machogu assured stakeholders of ongoing efforts to address the impact of the rains and pledged regular updates on the education sector.
