President William Ruto will address the nation on Friday at 1 pm, State House spokesman Hussein Mohammed said on Thursday.

Mohammed, who made the announcement on X, did not give any details about the address.

The Head of State is, however, highly expected to speak about the ongoing heavy rains that have killed at least 188 people since March and displaced hundreds of thousands.

The address will come a day after Ruto chaired a second Cabinet meeting to deliberate on extra measures to mitigate the devastating effects of floods, mudslides and landslides across the country.

He first chaired such ameeting on Tuesday.

During Thursday's meeting, the Cabinet was informed that the coastal region is likely to experience Cyclone Hidaya, which will result in heavy rainfall, large waves and strong winds that could affect marine activities in the Indian Ocean.

Noting that flooding, mudslides, landslides and other extreme weather conditions are a result of climate change, Cabinet resolved that the government, from now on, will rally the country in implementing measures, programmes and policies that will mitigate the effects of climate change.

The Cabinet was briefed on the weather forecast for the next three months, which shows that average to above average rains will continue in all parts of the country.

Consequently, flooding is expected in low-lying areas as are landslides and mudslides.
