Home that survived devastating Mai Mahiu floods gets Kenyans talking

• More than 160 people have lost their lives and property to the overwhelming rains that have pounded the country the past month.

A striking picture of a house left standing largely untouched in an area devastated by flash floods in Mai Mahiu has got Kenyans talking.

Amid the wreckage of personal property, stood a house left untouched through the storm that battered the area.

In the wee hours of Monday morning, flash floods swept away homes and other property in the area.

President William Ruto convened a special cabinet meeting at State House to address the flood disaster in the country, which has so far claimed more than 160 lives.

The flash floods occurred on Monday after a water body in Kijabe burst its banks and flew towards homes in Mai Mahiu.

While other flood-related deaths have been witnessed in Kenya, the Mai Mahiu tragedy has claimed the most lives.

The Kenya Meteorological Department predicts that the heavy rains, accompanied with floods and mudslides will continue until May.

The Kenya Red Cross continues its search and rescue and retrieval efforts. 76 people are reported missing while 110 have been traced.
